JODI CALI THOUGHT she was stuck with the
glossy white factory finish of her 1990s kitchen
cabinets—until she discovered gel stain. Now,
cream-color cabinets with a distressed look
provide a mellow backdrop to new appliances
and granite countertops. The Hartford,
Connecticut, mother and floral designer lightly
sanded the frames, doors, and crown molding
before rubbing on the thick stain from Bartley
(ideal for vertical surfaces) with paper towels,
then off with a rag. “It was a lot of work, but easy
to do,” says Jodi. “I’m proud to have achieved
such a great look on a real-life budget.’
